by alan on February 8, 2010

In writing the post below, I’ve restricted myself to the type  of abrasive papers that are relevant to the keen hobbiest and enthusiast.  It’s important that the right type of paper is used, because, it will save you time and money and your nerves!

ABRASIVES

In discussing the subject of sandpaper(s), I’m going to refer to them as abrasive paper(s). This is because the vast majority of these papers are coated with materials that aren’t sand.

For the purpose of this subject, we are going to concern ourselves with the types of paper that are used to achieve a finish for wood.

These days there are a whole range these type of papers.  And they’re made to fulfill particular task.  The backing sheet that the abrasive will be glued to, will vary from being:

paper backed

cloth backed

and

Velcro

Their tasks will be designed to tackle:

Preparing the bare wood

Preparing between coats and

finishing the final coat.
