Varathane spray polyurethane combines the quality of Varathane brand polyurethane within an aerosol can. It is a convenient way to apply a durable polyurethane finish to any wooden surface. Fine detail is difficult to finish evenly with a foam or bristle brush. Spraying the finish is convenient and fast and will accept subsequent coatings to create a hard-wearing finish in satin, semi-gloss and high gloss sheens. Varathane spray polyurethane can be used successfully over unfinished, natural wood, stained wood, and painted wood.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You’ll Need:
* Varathane spray polyurethane
* Drop cloths
* Foam brush
* 220-grit sanding pad
* Tack cloth
Step 1
Lay drop cloths over flooring, furniture and other objects to protect them from over spray.
Mask off perimeter of floor with masking tape to allow for clean edges.
Step 2
Shake the can of Varathane spray polyurethane vigorously for three minutes before use. Shake the can at various intervals while using the product to keep the product well-mixed.
Step 3
Hold the spray can 10 to 12 inches from the surface of the object you are finishing and spray in long sweeping motions to avoid drips and runs. If runs and drips appear, touch them up with a foam brush. Apply one light, even coat at a time for best results. At least three coats are recommended for a durable finish.
Trigger off between sweeps to avoid drips and runs.
Step 4
Allow each coat to dry thoroughly between coats. Varathane spray polyurethane dries to the touch in two hours and dries hard in four hours. For a smooth coating, sand the finished surface with a 220-grit sanding pad in between coats (called buffing). Remove the sanding dust with a tack cloth before spraying a fresh coat.
Lightly Abrade between coats with zinc stearate 400 grit – not sanding paper! If you use tack cloth lightly pass over don’t put pressure on as the cloth may leave smears behind.
Step 5
Hold the can upside down and push the button to clear the nozzle if the can is not emptied. When the nozzle is clear, only compressed gas will come out of the nozzle. The can is then ready to store.
